It serves to inform the public about significant occurrences locally, nationally, and globally, ranging from politics, economics, and social issues to entertainment, sports, and culture.

      Delivered in a factual and objective manner, news aims to keep individuals informed, educated, and engaged with the world around them. Journalists and news organizations play a crucial role in gathering, verifying, and presenting news stories with accuracy and integrity, often adhering to ethical standards and principles of journalism.

           In an age of rapid technological advancements and social media proliferation, the landscape of news consumption has evolved, with real-time updates and user-generated content influencing the dissemination and perception of news. Despite challenges such as misinformation and bias, reliable news sources remain essential for fostering an informed society, promoting accountability, and facilitating dialogue on key issues shaping our collective reality.

When we get news, it comes in two forms.

REAL NEWS

                                  Real news refers to information that is accurate, verifiable, and factually based. It is distinguished by its commitment to truth, objectivity, and integrity in reporting current events and developments from around the world. Real news sources adhere to ethical journalism standards and strive to provide a comprehensive and balanced view of events, offering context and analysis to help audiences better understand the world around them.

           By engaging in rigorous fact-checking, thorough research, and corroborating information from multiple sources, real news outlets aim to present a reliable and trustworthy account of the news. This commitment to truthfulness is vital in a media landscape where misinformation, propaganda, and fake news can easily spread, potentially influencing public opinion and shaping perceptions of reality.

      Consumers of real news are encouraged to critically evaluate the credibility of sources, verify the information they receive, and engage with a diverse range of perspectives to gain a well-rounded understanding of complex issues. By supporting real news reporting, individuals contribute to a more informed and democratic society, where transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of truth remain essential pillars of a healthy media ecosystem.

Here is a summary of some of the actual news stories that aired in Sri Lanka about the Corona epidemic:

 1. SAFETY PROCESS

  Sri Lanka, an Asian country, mobilized rapid measures to control the Corona epidemic.  Relaxed and prepared state reports were issued to reduce social anxiety and ensure health security.

 2. Professional Disclosures:

 Also, the government provided guidelines for health care professionals and specialized experts.  Among them, the use of masks as a social exercise and the needs of social control are included.

 3. Immunization: 

Government and private institutions implemented programs for providing vaccination either centrally or district-wise.  Majority preferred vaccination for the safety of the people.

 4. People's Response: 

People's views on the Corona epidemic varied.  While some were pleased with the safe handling of the epidemic, others expressed various objections and criticisms and questions on a social subject.

 The government mobilized various economic aid programs to control the pandemic and the infected economy.  Through these efforts were made to support small businesses and labor unions.

FAKE NEWS

                        Fake news refers to misinformation or disinformation presented as legitimate news. It can take many forms, including fabricated stories, misleading headlines, and manipulated images. The proliferation of fake news has significant implications for society, including:

1. Erosion of Trust: 

Fake news undermines trust in credible media sources, leading to skepticism about legitimate journalism.

2. Polarization:

 It often reinforces existing biases and divides, as people are more likely to share information that aligns with their beliefs.

3. Manipulation: 

Fake news can be used as a tool for political manipulation, influencing public opinion and electoral outcomes.

4. Public Health Risks:

 Misinformation about health topics, such as vaccines or treatments, can lead to harmful behaviors and public health crises.

5. Social Media's Role: 

The rise of social media has accelerated the spread of fake news, making it easier for false information to reach wide audiences quickly.

        To combat fake news, critical media literacy, fact-checking, and promoting reliable sources are essential. Individuals must develop skills to discern credible information from falsehoods, fostering a more informed public.

The spread of fake news about COVID-19 in Sri Lanka had significant impacts, affecting public perception and health behaviors. Key aspects include:

3. Government and Health Guidelines:

 Misleading information about lockdown measures, travel restrictions, and health protocols created confusion and resistance to compliance with official guidelines.

4. Social Media Influence:

 Platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp played a crucial role in the rapid dissemination of fake news, often making it challenging for individuals to distinguish between credible information and false narratives.

5. Community Impact: 

Misinformation fueled stigma against certain groups, particularly those infected or affected by COVID-19, impacting social cohesion and mental health.
